The works of Laurence Gartel, nicknamed the godfather of digital art, and Gidget Gein, former band member of the Marilyn Manson rock band, will be on display starting March 6 through April 3, 2004 at ArtWorks gallery in Miami’s Wynwood Art District. On March 6 starting at 7pm, ArtWorks along with Absolut Vodka will host the opening night party to celebrate the two artists. The exhibition is curated by W. F. Withers II.
Laurence Gartel, who has worked with musicians since the beginning of his career including Sid Vicious (Sex Pistols) and Debbie Harry (Blondie), will be introducing his digital video pieces which blend his art work with the musical mixes of DJ's from around the world. To add to the celebration, DJ Laboratory from New York and DJ Alura from Chicago will be spinning throughout the night. "It is going to be a stimulating visual and acoustic experience," commented Gartel, who will also be showing pieces from his collection from the '70's through today. Gartel started his digital art career in 1975 and, in addition to teaching Andy Warhol the secrets of digital art, has been commissioned by musical artists including Justin Timberlake, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Britney Spears as well as companies including Coca-Cola, Walt Disney, and Forbes. In 1991 Gartel was commissioned to produce Absolut Gartel, the first Absolut Vodka ad digitally created.
"The wonderful surprise about working with corporations is their understanding and respect for ones imagination," commented Gartel, "They allowed my creativity to follow its own path."
Gidget Gein, former bassist, songwriter, and co-creator of the Marilyn Manson rock band, expresses his experiences and emotions through several mediums including music, film and paint. Showing at ArtWorks will be his most recent works including a series of designer body bags. Gein explains “people go to extremes to look good. There is no reason vanity should end with death.”
