Boston's Celebrated Kwanzaa Concert Performs Saturday

OrigiNation Inc., the Roxbury-based theatre arts and dance troupe brings the essence of the Kwanzaa holiday to life this Saturday in a full dance company performance that honors family, culture, and community. The concert will be featuring performances by the 2006-2007 Performing Arts Program Students, resident youth companies including the NIA Dance troupe, Girlz of IMANI, IMANI Jr., and the Aleye Boyz troupe. The performance is at 3pm, Saturday, December 23, 2006, at the Back Bay Events Center Theater at 180 Berkeley St., Boston. Seating is reserved is i12 in advance and $15 at the door.

"There is something particularly special about our Kwanzaa concert that just about everyone will find inspirational, festive, and enjoyable this time of year; it is a unique non religious African American holiday that marries the rich traditions of Africa with those African Americans acquired here in this country and other places across the globe," said Shaumba-Yandje Dibinga, founder and executive director of OrigiNation. "Imagine, how creative and festive some of these traditions might be, if put to choreography, music and spoken word, and this is exactly what our Kwanzaa concert delivers and more."

The concert will draw heavily from the original intent of Kwanzaa which was created by scholar Dr. Maulana Karenga who is a current professor and chair of Black Studies at California State University, Long Beach. Many U.S. cities have issued proclamations in honor of the celebration of Kwanzaa which officially gets underway for seven days on December 26. Kwanzaa is also celebrated in numerous countries on the continents of Africa, North and South America, and Europe.

The concert event will also present special guest, Omekongo Dibinga also known as 'Mr. Culture', a spoken word artist, poet and publisher of books and cds that implore youth to act responsibly and consciously through academic achievement, self respect, and respect for others and the environment.

"This is a magnificent celebration of culture, family and community that is relevant to people of every diversity and cultural background-- especially at this time of the year. I am very happy being a part of this concert and celebration" said Omekongo Dibing.

Founded in 1994, OrigiNation, Incorporated is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that specializes in implementing innovative and dynamic programs, which motivate, challenge, and inspire youth to be the best they can be.
