Venus Jones Performs with Tyne Daly on the Ms. Magazine Cruise
Multitalented poet and author Venus Jones was a featured speaker on the Ms. Magazine 3rd Annual Cruise in February. Jones performed selections from her book "She Rose, on a Journey from Girl to Goddess" and shared the stage with six-time Emmy-award winning actor Tyne Daly to recite the poem "Feminism" by Denise Duhamel during the cruise's "Cultural Night."
Jones said, "Tyne Daly was a joy to work with! She truly loves people and I believe most of all poetry"
Daly said, "I really appreciate good poets and Venus Jones is a good poet."
Other speakers on the cruise included Kim Gandy, President of the National Organization for Women (NOW); Eleanor Smeal, President of the Feminist Majority Foundation; Ms. Magazine Executive Editor Katherine Spillar; Kathy Bonk, Co-Founder of the Communications Consortium Media Center; Ms. Magazine Money Editor Martha Burk, and long-time labor leader Dolores Huerta. Over one hundred feminist leaders and activists attended this conference.
Smeal said the objective of the trip is to "spread women's rights every place we can go and improve living conditions for women." While at sea, seminars covered topics such as the gender gap, elections, the press, and reproductive health. Other activities were planned in the various ports of call, including a Key West panel discussion with political strategist Celinda Lake and a tour of a women's health clinic and YWCA in Belize City. Stops were also made in Guatemala and Mexico.
In Belize, Jones met with Joan Burke, Executive Director of the Belize Family Life Association. "I was so moved hearing about the Belizean women's desires for mentors, choices, and opportunity," said Jones, "that I felt compelled to donate my poetry books to their organization in an effort to encourage inner strength and personal growth."
