Foul Language Filtering Technology for Cable Unveiled by TVGuardian at NCTA's Cable Show '07

TVGuardian, LLC, The Foul Language Filtering Company, is bringing the cable industry the ability to filter out bad words. The company is showcasing the technology within the CableNET booth #221 at NCTA's Cable Show, through May 9 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV.

it's that words still matter to most Americans.
"If the recent Don Imus incident revealed anything," said Britt Bennett, President, "it's that words still matter to most Americans."

"Time Magazine has reported that more people are offended by bad language on TV than sex, nudity, violence or drug abuse," Bennett continued. "That makes foul language the Number One most offensive aspect of TV today. The TVG technology can eliminate 98% of that problem."

Commissioner Deborah Tate recently noted TVGuardian in the FCC Report on Violent Programming and Its Impact on Children. "TVGuardian technology," wrote the Commissioner, "actually detects and filters profanity and other offensive phrases chosen by the parent--including 'hate words' and racial slurs--while you watch movies or television shows."

As an example of how TVG works, if a character on TV shouts, "Get the f--- out of here!," that phrase is automatically muted and a replacement sentence ("Get out of here!") is displayed in closed-captioning.

What sets TVG apart from the parental controls already deployed in cable? "Current parental controls merely lock or block programs with offensive content," says Bennett. "With TVG, viewers are given an expanded range of viewing options. Not many shows actually have nudity or excessive violence, but offensive language is in practically everything. Why block the entire show just because there's an 'L' in the rating?"

In a recent survey of 1291 Americans by Qualtrics.com, 33% of respondents said they would be more likely to purchase pay-per-view programs or subscribe to premium movie channels if language filtering were offered. More viewing options translate into more customer purchases.

TVG is a software solution that can be built into existing cable boxes. With it enabled, viewers may choose how much foul language to filter, with Strict, Moderate, or Tolerant settings.

"Our mission remains the same as it has since the invention of this technology," said Bennett. "Americans should be allowed to control the language entering their homes through the television they watch."

It has been successfully deployed in over 10 million TVs and DVD players, and is now being offered to the leading cable and satellite providers. The company is based in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
