Acclaimed rock band Spoon will headline a benefit concert with special guest Dr. Octagon aka Kool Keith next week at The Music Box @ Fonda in Los Angeles to benefit Creative Commons and to kick off WIRED NextFestTM 2007. Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia and a board member of Creative Commons, will be on hand to introduce the show.
Austin-based Spoon is touring in support of its recently released album “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga,” which has received widespread praise from fans, music critics and mainstream press alike. This summer, Spoon frontman Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno met the band's most famous groupie when Wired brought the trio together in Tokyo to make “Keepon dancing to Spoon’s Don’t You Evah.” This viral video currently has over 220,000 views and over 25,000 links, according to YouTube.
Keepon will get down at the sold-out concert, and then will join his robotic brethren at WIRED NextFest later in the week. WIRED NextFest is a unique world’s fair-style event showcasing future technologies in design, entertainment, communication, healthcare, transportation, sustainable living and more, at the Los Angeles Convention Center, September 13–16, 2007.
Concertgoers will get a sneak peek at some of the other futuristic exhibits to be showcased at WIRED NextFest, including:
- Brainball – A game in which you compete in relaxation. The players' brainwaves control a ball on a table, and the mellower player scores a goal over the opponent.
- Venturi Astrolab – The first high-performance electro-solar hybrid vehicle to be commercialized in the world with zero emissions and top speeds of 120 km/hour.
- WheelSurf – A monocycle - part motorbike and part skateboard - it’s a giant motorized wheel that you sit inside of and navigate by leaning.
- Furminator – A pinball machine that puts the player inside the game. Using a virtual reality helmut, the player is completely immersed with his or her nose right behind the flippers and the ball appearing only centimeters from his or her face.
Proceeds from the concert will benefit Creative Commons, the non-profit organization devoted to expanding the range of creative work available for others to build upon and share legally. This is the third benefit concert WIRED has produced for Creative Commons. Previous CC benefits featured David Byrne & Gilberto Gil; and Girl Talk, Diplo and Peeping Tom.
