Adult Education is All Laughs : Stand Up Comedian and Character Actor Jason Saffer who portrays Jolene Sugarbaker the Trailer Park Queen, teaches Stand Up Comedy Class for Continued Education Classes through Fairfax County Virginia Public Schools with live performance at end.
Female Impersonator and Stand-up Comedian Jason Saffer, The Trailer Park Queen, brings jokes to Adult Education. Saffer, using his own brand of humor and over 8 years of professional background, is teaching the unusual comedy classes for the Fairfax County Schools Adult Enrichment Classes Etc. near Washington D.C..
The comedy classes were hatched by Saffer, who grew up in rural Fauquier County Virginia. He credits the people he met at bingo halls and garage sales there for inspiring the creation of his Sugarbaker character, a kitchy mobile home style consultant and explainer of the obvious. He says he decided to bring this unique character to teach classes which would further the interest in the arts, expecially stand up comedy.
There have been 3 graduating classes in 2003.
For two months housewives, consultants, administrators, government workers and any one else interested can mine their ethnic and social backgrounds, divorces, spouses and jobs for possible laughs. The course has a syllabus including lessons on concise set ups and punchlines, expressive body movements and even proper microphone etiquette. The classes are using Judy Carter's "Stand Up Comedy : The Book" which she graciously made available to Saffer/Sugarbaker.
"I teach my students to turn their problems into humor," Saffer/Sugarbaker says.
"Have you checked the prices you pay to a therapist? Also I can safely say I can teach anyone to write a stand up routine. It's the funny part that's left to the student".
Jolene's Comedy Boot Camp, as the classes are called, had its first graduation ceremonies a couple of months ago. The ceremonies were held a night club in Arlington, VA and the rites included a 5 minute performance from each student. Only after the show were the diplomas given.
The place was packed, every seat taken and people were standing side by side. Every one wanted to see the new comic's take on the droolery of life, marketing reports gone askew and other struggles. Word has it that several Boot Camp graduates have participated in open mics around the area and are beginning to be recognized. And, there is a waiting list for future classes.
Saffer currently resides in Alexandria, VA and has appeared as his character, Jolene Sugarbaker at major events on the East Coast, and hosts Jolene's Funnies at Freddie's Beach Bar. He has appeared on Fox News, the Roseanne Talk Show and many radio stations. "Cooking the Classics with Jolene" is another of Saffer's projects.
"Get others to laugh at your problems, you'll feel better," Jolene says.
