What do Historically Black Colleges, The City of Daytona Beach, Graffiti PR, Wordstock, Inc. and Mudumultimedia, Inc. all have in common? The 2004 Black College Reunion in Daytona Beach, Florida. Come April 16th Daytona Beach will be the location for Black Beach Week and the Black College Reunion where over one-hundred thousand spring breakers will be indulging in all forms of entertainment from step shows to beauty competitions, from food festivals to career fairs – and its newest component – poetry. Wordstock, Inc., a New York based literacy and poetry organization, has jumped on this historical bandwagon to produce for the first time at the BCR a literary element in the form of poetry.

On April 16-19, 2004 tens of thousands of young African-Americans from nearly every corner of the United States and from historically Black Colleges will converge on Daytona Beach Florida for their yearly rite of passage. The Black College Reunion (BCR) has been embraced as a cultural festival with activities centered on beach barbecues, fashion shows, music concerts, a street festival and carnival as well as a gospel showcase. As many as 100,000 visitors arrive during the spring months embrace this as a cultural festival catering to African Americans. The City of Daytona Beach recently elected its first African-American female Mayor: Yvonne Scarlett-Golden. Miss Golden has given her blessing and full support for this years events. The estimated 100,000 visitors pump more than $100 billion into the local economy.

In past seasons officials from Black Entertainment Television took note of the large African-American crowd and began recording a show of music, games and fashion at the oceanfront bandstand. Featured talent has included the likes of Platinum Rapper 50 cent, Busta Rhyme, Ashanti, Mary J. Blige and a host of other A-list talent. The BCR, a yearly weekend celebration known for its flashy cars, hip-hop music and non-stop action is taking a detour and will incorporate activities for more mature audiences. Black College Reunion began in the mid-1980s as a small event hosted by Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida. Since then Black College Reunion has expanded to include musical performances, concerts, step shows, food festivals, athletic events, beauty competitions, and career fairs. Regardless of your motives, there is something for you at Black College Reunion and this year is no different, well, except for the poetry.
