STAN RIDGWAY, LIVING IN TUFF SHED ON LAWNS OF FRIENDS, releases NEW CD informally on Internet
Snakebite
Stan Ridgway continues his remarkable history of American story telling, with this, his latest release Snakebite. A truly outstanding record that places him in the good company of Johnny Cash, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits as songwriter and story teller. What I like best about his songs are that they hook me with their bluesy, country (The Hank Williams not Dixy Chix kind), jazzy, sometimes modern rhythms and before I know it I'm caught up in the tale and dying to know how the story ends. He never disappoints. I soon find myself empathizing with fork lift operators, criminals on the run, circus freaks and a confederate soldier pining for his girl... and these are just a few of the actors in this play.
I found "My Rose Marie" particularly moving and with the addition of guest Skip Heller on guitar, this song will surely stand the test of time. Other stand out tracks for me are "Into the Sun", and a brutally honest "Talking Wall of Voodoo Blues" ... a Cliff Note play by play of the rise and fall of his former band Wall of Voodoo. "Throw it All Away" and "Afghan Forklift" are uncompromising, but as radio friendly as some of his earlier works.
If you are already a fan of Stan Ridgeway, this CD is bound to become one of the favorites in your collection. If you are new to the genius that is Mr. Ridgway this is as good a place to start as any. You will be won over after the first song and happy to see that there are 15 other gems to follow. - GOOD MUSIC IN TUFF SHEDS MAGAZINE
Who is it?: Stan Ridgway’s musical career began in the late seventies as part of a soundtrack company to create music for low-budget horror films. From the ashes, Wall Of Voodoo was born, and with Ridgway as lead voice, released an EP, two albums, and the 1982 hit single “Mexican Radio”.
After Wall Of Voodoo, Ridgway has embarked on a solo career that has included collaborations with drummer Stewart Copeland of The Police on the film "Rumblefish” dir. by Francis Ford Coppola, and numerous other independent film soundtracks.
As well as producing other artists, (most recently Frank Black and The Catholics “Show Me Your Tears” (2003), Ridgway has continued to release critically acclaimed solo recordings and audio projects, most recently “Holiday In Dirt” (2002) on NewWest Records, "Music for Blood" (2003), a collaboration with the artist Mark Ryden and composer Pietra Wexstun (Hecate's Angels).
And now in April 2004, “Snakebite” on redFLY Records.
