Rock Stars On God: 20 Artists Get Challenged About Faith, Releases May 4, 2004

Rock stars have a lot to say about the most pivotal person in all of history, and Doug Van Pelt, editor of HM magazine, got it has it on tape. Relevant Book’s Rock Stars on God (Relevant Books) is a collection of interviews featured in the “What So & So Sez” section of Christian rock magazine HM. This is a “fly on the wall,” inside perspective on a frank and open discussion of spiritual matters, all transcribed faithfully and word-for-word.

Artists interviewed range from Rage Against the Machine to Jesse Camp, a former MTV vee-jay to Metallica and Godsmack. From an unexpected perspective, Relevant Books and Doug Van Pelt offer a raw and controversial look at how influential members of the music community view the person of Jesus, Christianity and Christians. But Van Pelt doesn’t stop there. In the last chapter, Thoughts on Evangelism, he offers a fresh perspective on reaching out and interacting with the culture around us.

Unlike a typical interview, Van Pelt covers a vast array of topics, including those that most journalists don’t dare tackle. He asks questions like, How do you feel about Jesus Christ? What is your philosophy on life? If you die today, what happens? Such questions garnered responses like, “I don’t have any respect for weak philosophies, such as, like, Christianity. All of my beliefs are rooted in science. If I can’t see it, or if I can’t touch it, or if I don’t have proof, it does not exist,” from Peter Steele of Type O Negative.

When asked, “What do you think of His claims to be the way, the Truth, and the Life, ‘No one comes to the Father but by me?’ “Green Day’s Mike Dirnt replied, “Sounds a little Mafioso to me. You know, to each their own. Everyone has the right to believe in whatever they believe in. Like I said, I’m an optimist, so I believe in some sort of life after death, I don’t know what kind.”

“Through his interviews Doug has always been able to bring out the best in people. He gets them to explore areas, topics and thoughts that are often uncharted waters in the world of rock star interviews. People open up to Doug, as displayed in these pages.” Michael Sweet, from the foreword.

Doug Van Pelt is the founder and editor of HM, a 15-year-old Christian hard music magazine that covers the wide span of hard music including hardcore, metal, emo, rock, alternative, punk, ska and industrial. He has served as columnists to CCM Magazine and Guitar World Magazine, and with his punk band, Lust Control, Van Pelt has recorded for two major record labels, releasing two albums. He lives in Austin, Texas.

Founded in 2001, Relevant Books specializes in publishing titles in three categories: God, Life and Progressive Culture. Past and current titles include Walk On: The Spiritual Journey of U2, The Gospel According to Tony Soprano and Spiritual Journeys: How Faith Has Influenced 12 Music Icons.
