Celebrities to "Race" in Soap Box Derby

 The 5th Annual Greater Los Angeles Soap Box Derby event will be held in La Canada Flintridge on May 29th and will include 3 celebrity races. Six "volunteer" celebrities will include DAVID DREIR, Representive U.S. Congress; Laura Olhasso, Mayor of La Canada Flintridge; Sherrill Carbonetti, La Canadan of the year, Tim Peters, Captain, Crescenta Valley Sheriffs station; and James Smith, traffic control officer from the Crescenta Valley Sheriffs station.
This will be the largest Official Race sanctioned by the World-Famous All American Soap Box Derby of Akron, Ohio, to be held in Los Angeles County and is open to all boys and girls ages 8 to 17. The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. The race will be run on Michigan Hill in La Canada Flintridge and starts at 8 a.m. and continues until all races have been run.

The main National Sponsor of the event is the Home Depot Stores and the local sponsors are the La Canada Noon Kiwanis Club and the California Soap Box Derby Association. The goals of the Soap Box Derby are to teach youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship; the spirit of competition; the preserverance to continue a project once it has begun; and to foster adult cooperation Winners of the race will be provided with financial support to compete in the All American Soap Box Derby Championship finals to be held in Akron, Ohio on July 31st.
