in the second floor café. It continues until August 10th. Spiller, a recent winner in the 2004 Soho Photo National Competition, presents his newest work from his series: Common Denominator.
He explains: “Common Denominator catches us revealing ourselves in the complex world we inhabit. ‘Unstaged’ images exposing the truth of spontaneity, and provocative words, remind us that we are the texture of humanity and emotion is the language we speak.”
Spiller has been using photography as social commentary since 1995 making images of people in public places engaging in daily life. “People expose themselves”, he says, “by their behavior, what they wear or don’t wear, what they carry, who they’re with, by their gestures – secret ones, grandiose ones, and everything in-between. And”, he continues, “because feelings are organic, they happen without conscious effort giving rise to universality or the notion of a Common Denominator among all humanity.”
Spiller’s finished pieces are iris inkjet prints, made from 35 mm, black and white, negative film. They range in size up to 41” x 89” (framed). Some photographs are accompanied by text, separately framed. The writing is his take on what’s happening. “But really,” he says, “it’s just the opening gambit.” The body of work is ongoing.
