The Kazakh Kurmangazy Orchestra of Folk Instruments and the Kazakh Chamber Orchestra
New York, NY February 1, 2005 -- The renowned Kazakh State Kurmangazy Orchestra of Folk Instruments and the Kazakh State Chamber Orchestra “Academy of Soloists” present two concerts of folk music of Kazakhstan for the first time ever in the United States of America..
The concert program includes traditional Kazakh melodies, kyuis (koo-eez), reflecting the freedom-loving spirit and ancient history of the Kazakhs along with their jovial, unfailing good nature, in addition to the more familiar classical music from Kazakhstan and the world beyond Kazakhstan’s borders. Classical numbers and pieces by contemporary Kazakh composers will also be performed.
The first U.S. performance of the Kazakh musicians will be conducted at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts in Washington, D.C. on Monday, February 1. A follow up concert will be performed in New York City at Carnegie Hall on Thursday February 3, 2005.
The remarkable folk artistry of the Kurmangazy Orchestra, which celebrated its 70th anniversary in November, 2004, has drawn rave reviews in London, Vienna, Rome, Paris, Berlin, and Tokyo.
The orchestra is the largest one in Kazakhstan. It is named after Kurmangazy - the most renowned Kazakh folk composer and dombra player of the 19th century. Since 1991, the orchestra has been conducted by the Merited artist of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Aytkali Zhayimov. Mr. Zhayimov has not only focused the orchestra on performing the traditional Kazakh music by Kurmangazy, Tattimbet, Sougur, Makhambet, Bayserke and other famous composers, but also introduced ancient Kazakh folk musical instruments – kylkobyz, sherter, sybyzgy, saszyrnay and shankobyz. Along with tradional Kazakh music the orchestra brilliantly performs classical pieces.
Kurmangazy Orchestra has performed in the countries of the former Soviet Union, as well as Poland, Romania, Hungary, Germany, Check Republic, Finland, France, Sweden, Portugal, Denmark, India, China, Afghanistan, Italy and Turkey.
The Kazakh State Chamber Orchestra, “Academy of Soloists” brings together talented string musicians - winners of many prestigious international prizes. It is a young ensemble but has already won acclaim and the gratitude of its listeners in many countries. The Academy’s repertoire includes works by Mozart, Paganini, Tchaikovsky, and Bernstein, as well as modern Kazakh composers, such as Almaz Serkebayev and Tles Kazhgaliev. The chief conductor of the orchestra since its inception in 1991 is Batykhdzhan Musakhodzhayeva. A talented conductor and a violin player, she is the graduate of the Moscow Thaikovsky Conservatory.
The Academy of Soloists has performed in the US in 1995, when it took part in an International music festival dedicated to the Third Millennium of Jerusalem, as well as in Italy, Germany, Russia, Japan, South Korea and Austria.
Along with the orchestras the tour brings to the US three brilliant vocalists from Kazakhstan – Zhanat Baktai, Talgat Musabayev and Ramazan Stamgaziyev. Ms. Baktai is the primadonna of the Presidential and National Opera, that has leading parts in many classical opera masterpieces. Mr. Musabayev is the rising star of the Kazakh opera scene, though already the soloist of the Kazakh National Opera. Mr. Stamgaziyev represents the Kazakh national school of vocal art, the impersonation of the centuries old folk singing traditions.
