Haze Gallery is proud to present Counterpoint, an exciting new show featuring the mingling of painting, drawing and music. Grammy Award winning composer Philip Marshall has created a new musical piece blending electronica and a traditional string quartet that responds to the work of Donna Avedisian and Melissa Smith. Donna Avedisian’s work, “Sound Paintings”, is a series of oil paintings in which form and color is inspired by her perception of phenomenological happenings in the blurring of artificial and natural distinctions that surround us. Melissa Smith presents beautiful, sexy and challenging new paintings and drawings.
Donna A. Avedisian received her MFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 1995. She has shown her work in solo shows at David Allen Gallery in Brooklyn (2002) and at Yearsley Spring Gallery in Philadelphia (1998). In 2003 her work was included in the “Exhibition of American Art” in Chicago, juried by James Rondeau, Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, Art Institute of Chicago. She has shown at The Drawing Center in New York, Superfine in Brooklyn and was juried into the “19th Annual Juried Show” (1999) at the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts by Lisa Dennison, Chief Curator/Deputy Director of the Guggenheim Museum.
Melissa Smith is a technically gifted drawer who has most recently shown in The Best Coast in Portland (2003). Smith has had several shows in her home of Eugene, OR, as well as showing at The Tea Zone in Portland and in the Portland Independent Salon (2001). Her work has been featured on artcritical.com. Her work is figurative, sexual and incredibly challenging.
Philip Marshall of Los Angeles, CA received degrees in Music Composition and Research Psychology from the University of Irvine. Marshall has worked on many films such as The Beach, The Straight Story and Arlington Road. He wrote the music for the 2003 Academy Award winning documentary film Twin Towers. He has done over 20 film scores for Disney, wrote the music to the legendary film Endless Summer 2 and has won two Grammies for his work with the legendary B.B. King. For the Haze Gallery Marshall has composed a new piece that is a direct response to the visual work in the show. Blending aspects of neoclassical form and groundbreaking electronica, his live string quartet performance will be a world premiere of this composer’s newest work.
