Documentary Tribute to 9/11's Volunteers to Premier in San Diego

Moorpark, CA  August 29, 2005 -— When the planes hit the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 photographers captured the images of terrified New Yorkers running for their lives. Before the dust settled an extraordinary group of dedicated volunteers flocked to the site to begin the largest recovery/rescue mission in U.S. history.

Answering the Call: Ground Zero’s Volunteers, a new documentary narrated by Kathleen Turner, tells their stories as it transports viewers behind the tightest of security checkpoints into an emergency village, one that became home to thousands of volunteers and rescuers. The film, by 25-year veteran volunteer firefighter and filmmaker Lou Angeli and Ground Zero volunteer coordinator Bunny Dubin, will be shown across the nation this September in memorial tributes, including New York, Los Angeles and San Diego. The documentary will also have a limited theatrical release in select cities.

Through Angeli’s never-before-seen footage, Answering the Call: Ground Zero’s Volunteers chronicles the tens of thousands of emergency personnel—both on and off-duty—who responded to the nation's worst disaster. The film, scored by award-winning composer Geoff Levin, captures the inspiring teamwork displayed by thousands of strangers from all walks of life in the days following the deadliest attack on American soil.

It answers the questions: how did a petite 20-year-old accomplish rescue missions that 200-pound first responders could not, what exactly did the K-9 dogs do, what was Billy Idol’s former drummer doing on that dangerous rubble pile with a welding torch, where and how did the emergency workers take solace, how did faith ministries fit in—and what role did “the Entenmann’s Lady” play?

“We just had to tell the stories of these amazing volunteers, who left their families and jobs in some case to work around the clock at the most dangerous disaster site in history—Ground Zero, “ said Angeli.

“The spirit of volunteerism was the heart and soul of the Ground Zero experience, recounting these stories for all the world, Answering the Call will become a benchmark for social awareness, inspiring people of goodwill to look into their hearts, roll up their sleeves and do the right thing,” said Dubin. “In other words, why wait for disaster to strike? Get involved and help one another right now.”

The documentary’s world premiere will be held on Thursday, September 1st directly following a 6:00 p.m. reception at the UltraStar Poway 10 Theater, 13475 Poway Road in Poway, California, 22 miles north of San Diego. Co-executive producers Patricia Olesky and Brunella Lisi and filmmakers Angeli and Dubin of Chesca Media Group LLC will be available for questions and media interviews. They will be joined by local fire, law enforcement and rescue personnel.

Answering the Call: Ground Zero’s Volunteers will also be presented by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Southern California Chapter at its annual 9/11 Memorial Screening, which is free and open to the public. The film will be shown continuously on September 11 at the 1,400-seat Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro, CA. Further screenings will be held in New York.
